Carpal tunnel syndrome is one of the most common nerve compression conditions, causing numbness, tingling, and pain in the hand and wrist. If you work at a computer, use tools with repetitive hand motions, or spend hours on your phone, you may be at risk. At Artemis Wellness Clinic in Richmond, we treat carpal tunnel syndrome using a multidisciplinary approach that addresses both the symptoms and the underlying causes.
What Is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
The carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway on the palm side of your wrist, formed by bones and ligaments. The median nerve passes through this tunnel along with the tendons that control your fingers. Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the tunnel narrows or the tissues surrounding the tendons swell, compressing the median nerve.
Common symptoms include numbness and tingling in the thumb, index, middle, and ring fingers, pain in the wrist that may radiate up the arm, weakness in the hand making it difficult to grip objects, symptoms that are worse at night or upon waking, and dropping objects due to reduced grip strength.
Risk factors include repetitive hand and wrist motions (typing, assembly work, using vibrating tools), pregnancy and hormonal changes, diabetes and thyroid conditions, wrist injuries or fractures, and inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.
How We Treat Carpal Tunnel at Artemis
RMT Massage Therapy
Our RMTs address carpal tunnel by treating the muscles and fascia of the entire forearm, wrist, and hand. Techniques include myofascial release of the forearm flexors and extensors, specific work on the carpal tunnel structures to create more space for the median nerve, treatment of the neck and shoulder to address thoracic outlet involvement (which often accompanies carpal tunnel), and nerve gliding techniques to improve median nerve mobility.
Acupuncture for Carpal Tunnel
Acupuncture is effective for reducing inflammation in the carpal tunnel and decreasing nerve pain. Our Registered Acupuncturist targets local wrist points and distal points that reduce swelling, improve circulation, and promote nerve healing. Studies have shown acupuncture can be as effective as corticosteroid injections for mild to moderate carpal tunnel syndrome.
Physiotherapy and Kinesiology
Our physiotherapy approach includes wrist splinting recommendations, nerve and tendon gliding exercises, ergonomic workstation assessment, strengthening exercises for the hand and forearm, and activity modification strategies.
WorkSafeBC and Insurance Coverage
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a recognized workplace injury. If your symptoms are related to your job duties, treatment may be covered through WorkSafeBC. We also offer direct billing with most extended health insurance providers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can carpal tunnel be treated without surgery?
Yes. Many cases of mild to moderate carpal tunnel syndrome respond well to conservative treatment. Early intervention with RMT, acupuncture, and physiotherapy can prevent the need for surgery.
How long does carpal tunnel treatment take?
Most patients see improvement within 4 to 8 weeks of consistent treatment. Severe or long-standing cases may require longer treatment.
Should I wear a wrist brace?
A wrist splint worn at night can help by keeping your wrist in a neutral position while you sleep. Your physiotherapist can recommend the appropriate type.
